As I sit on December 26th after the Christmas events are winding down and gifting has finally stopped, I realize that a Play Simple year of detox is very much needed. I realize that after months of discussing and yapping about it, Fixed Axle 15 is a short 5 days away. My two children, minion one and two, 3 and 1 respectively, are making noise with their new toys and chasing each other around the house. Their new toys are more than I had at their age. The kicker… my wife and I decided not to buy them anything this year.
Figuring the tornados we call children are too young to realize what is going on, and knowing they have more toys than they realistically need, we bet on the family buying them enough without any mom and dad support and boy, were we correct. The family not only did not let us down, they went above and beyond. All the while not knowing we were conducting this experiment.
I don’t want to sound ungrateful, we are very fortunate to have such a great support system in our lives that shower our children with more than they can ask for. But this is also a sign of what we are letting go. Simplicity and appreciation for what you have in front of you. Knowing that you can enjoy things without needing something new, or shiny.
Shut the TV off, get off the all day social media and put the smart phone down. Have a conversation; spend time laughing with a loved friend or family member. Don’t rely on the new episode of that show to be entertained or the streaming show binge where you watch a whole season in one sitting. Pick up a musical instrument, go for a run, pick up a yoyo and just throw it. Try to land that trick you thought was not possible. Write a short story, write a long story, lose yourself in the moment, create joy with simplicity, and bring joy by sharing thoughts, laughter and love. Make 2015 the year you make new friends, rekindle with old ones and reinforce those you have around you.
This year will begin the detox, if you decide to follow, please give feedback, if you decide to join us, please share your experiences, if you just want to write a blog entry or two, please feel free to submit, but no matter what you do, keep Playing Simple.
