Alright, perhaps it’s not as bad as I think and as I typed that I realized that we really didn’t disconnect all of the way, but it’s a start. We are officially no cable people. We are part of the anti-movement maaaaaaaan!
Not really, my wife and I talked about it and decided to just not do cable. I went to my local store that sells everything from shoes to TVs to 144 toilet rolls in bulk and purchased an HDTV antenna that sticks to my wall. We can pick up all local channels on our HDTV at the one time cost of, drumroll please, $39.99.
You know the drill, NBC, ABC, FOX, etc… no DVR, no Food Network, even though PBS has a great cooking channel on their second or third channel. Yes, local TV now has secondary and even tertiary channels with movies and shows 24/7. Not your HBO movies, but at the price of an antenna, it’s worth the entry fee for sure. A step up from what I had in the 80s growing up and light years ahead of what my parents had in their younger lives.
Here is the kicker; Are you are ready for the very shocking news? We are surviving. Not only surviving, but thriving and now I’m playing with my kids in our small house. I’m chasing them through the hall and they chase me. We talk, in person, actual conversation. I am trying to teach minion one to speak Spanish. It would be a shame for my second tongue to go to waste or be forgotten. I have them as fluent as a high school graduate now, which is not saying much.
The point of this ramble is that I am a little shocked, I had to detox for a couple of days and watching the NFL playoffs was a bit nuts without pause capability and those few minutes I lost signal before the game started. It all got sorted out, but I remember having rabbit ears on a TV and losing signal before. It can be a nuisance and the doubt kicks in, why did I leave my reliable source of mindless blah blah, then the $100+ that we were giving to the cable company for this addiction comes back into mind and I remember that by the end of #fixedaxle12, I’ll be $1,200 richer. Better yet, I can spend $1,200 on more worthy things for the minions and my better half.
Cooking dinner has become an event, a fun one at that. No take out to rush through, no sir, my minions and the lovely lady that I tricked into marrying me are enjoying home cooked meals by yours truly and they ate it with a smile. We talked, to each other, no distractions, no staring at the flat box on the wall, just us four getting closer.
We do have Netflix still, I do enjoy some of their programing and minion one is fond of some of the kids shows, but at least it’s under control. We do enjoy Modern Family on ABC, if we miss it, we wait a week and watch it streamed. The DVR convenience is not there, but hey, bigger minion told me he wants to speak Spanish today. That is worth more than the mindless blah we got from TV. Maybe I’ll teach them some chess soon…
